How Soon Can You Return to Normal Life After Brain Tumor Surgery?

One of the questions patients and families ask most often is: how long after brain tumor surgery can I go back to my normal work? In this video Prof. Dr. A. F. M. Momtazul Haque explains that there is no single answer — it depends on the patient’s condition before surgery, their condition after surgery and, above all, the type of tumor.

Benign tumors: an excellent outlook

When a tumor is benign (not cancerous) — for example a pituitary tumor, a meningioma or a schwannoma — the result is usually excellent. A typical example is a patient with a meningioma who was working normally before the operation and whose consciousness level (Glasgow Coma Scale, GCS) was a full 15 before and after surgery:

  • Discharged home about 3–4 days after the operation
  • Stitches removed after about 10–15 days
  • Then returns to normal life

Malignant tumors and late presentation

Malignant (cancer-type) tumors such as glioblastoma (GBM, grade IV) or grade III gliomas behave differently. And when a patient reaches hospital in a very poor condition and needs ICU support, the length of hospital stay and the time to return to normal life become unpredictable.

The key message: diagnose early

If symptoms such as persistent headache or vomiting appear, have a CT scan or MRI early. When a tumor is found early and operated on while the patient’s GCS is still good, early recovery — and a quick return to normal life — is possible.
