In this introductory video Prof. Dr. A. F. M. Momtazul Haque — neuro and spine surgeon, Professor and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Dhaka Medical College & Hospital — describes the modern neurosurgical services patients can now receive in Bangladesh.
Neurosurgery covers two areas: the brain and the spine.
Brain
- Head injury, brain tumors, blood-vessel problems and congenital defects
- Microscopic surgery for all kinds of brain tumors
- Endoscopic surgery through the nose, without opening the skull, for tumors such as pituitary tumors and craniopharyngioma — with results of an international standard
- Aneurysm surgery for burst blood vessels, and bypass surgery when blood flow to the brain is reduced
- Children’s conditions, including hydrocephalus (water collecting in the head) treated with endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) or a shunt
Spine
- Lumbar disc prolapse: 90–95% of patients do not need an operation. An experienced neurosurgeon can tell you when you do — and which operation suits you best: microscopic, endoscopic, or rod-and-screw spinal fusion
- The same problems in the neck (cervical spine), with very good surgical results
- Degenerative spine disease, spinal TB and spinal fractures from injury — treated to international standards
For any problem of the brain or spine, the doctor’s assurance is that you no longer need to go abroad: the aim is that you receive the highest standard of treatment in Bangladesh, with results that are largely of an international standard.
